This volume compiles crime statistics for 281 metropolitan areas and 201 cities with a population of 100,000 or more; data reflect crime rates and changes in crime over time.
Abstract
Crime categories include total crime, violent crime, property crime, murder, rape, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, larceny and theft, and motor vehicle theft. In addition, numbers and rates of police patrolling the streets of large cities are featured. All data are presented in both alphabetical and rank order, and each page of statistics prominently displays national totals at the top and pertinent footnotes and source information at the bottom. An entire section of the volume is devoted to supplementary information, such as population data and geographic descriptions, to place crime statistics in the proper context. The volume is organized in three sections: (1) crime statistics for metropolitan areas; (2) crime statistics and police data for all cities with a population of 100,000 or more; and (3) appendixes that provide population tables for cities and metropolitan areas and cross-reference tools to describe which cities and counties comprise specific metropolitan areas. All statistics are based on data from Crime in the United States 1994, an annual publication of the Federal Bureau of Investigation that reports crime statistics collected under the Uniform Crime Reporting Program. 90 tables
