During the summer of 1994, a series of sniper attacks in Suffolk County, New York, prompted a highly concentrated response from the police department.
Abstract
The police department implemented a comprehensive strategy to provide a sense of public security and to develop intelligence through increased police activity. Each police department division developed individual strategies that contributed to the police department's overall response. Because shooting incidents occurred in or adjacent to the 4th police precinct, the Patrol Division initiated saturation patrol throughout the 4th and surrounding precincts. Detectives from the Homicide Squad canvassed neighborhoods surrounding the sniper attacks, while the Public Information Bureau worked closely with the Detective Division to manage daily media inquiries. By mobilizing resources, the Suffolk County Police Department was able to identify and apprehend the sniper. The rapid and highly visible response of the police department not only prevented further attacks but also restored a sense of public safety. Details of the police investigation related to identifying and interviewing the suspect are provided. 2 photographs
