These 12 papers examine the current knowledge, skills, and values needed by probation officers and social workers who work with offenders in England and Wales, as well as the context in which this work takes place and the outcomes of effective practice.
Abstract
Five papers focusing on issues in working with offenders examine probation training and its future, the skills and competencies needed in effective working practice, the form and role of anti-discriminatory practice, the nature and substance of autonomy and accountability, and masculinity and perspectives on crime causes and their implications for new ways of working. Four papers on the contacts of work with offenders discuss the role of probation committees in monitoring the development of the probation service; the practice and presentation of pre- sentence reports; the nature, debates, aims, outcomes, and implications of community-based corrections; and working with offenders who are in transition from prison to the community. The final three papers focus on outcomes of good practice and cover partnerships in working with offenders, the role of private agencies in dealing with crime, the practice and effectiveness of crime prevention programs, and the evaluation of service and program effectiveness.
