This report contains information on programs authorized by the 1994 Crime Act; program descriptions summarize fiscal year 1996 appropriations and the President's request for fiscal year 1997 and program information and funding levels and provide information on who is eligible to apply for grants and the status of program regulations and guidelines.
Abstract
Program funding areas concern the development and strengthening of law enforcement and prosecutorial strategies to combat violent crime against women and to improve victim services in cases involving violent crime against women; policies that treat domestic violence as a serious criminal offense; cooperative efforts between law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, victim advocacy groups, and other related parties to investigate and prosecute incidents of domestic violence and child abuse; and treatment and counseling for victims of domestic violence and child abuse. Additional program funding areas focus on building or expanding correctional facilities for both violent and nonviolent offenders, truth-in-sentencing incentives, residential substance abuse treatment for State prisoners, drug courts, the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, the National Criminal History Improvement Program, domestic violence and stalking prevention strategies, parole officers who work with released sex offenders, family support, criminal justice system automation and technological improvements, and block grants.
