The data reveal that overall serious crime decreased by 5.7 percent from the previous year, following a 3.2 percent overall increase in 1990. However, violent crime increased by 6.7 percent. Homicide decreased by nearly 25 percent, rape offenses increased by 25 percent, and assaults increased by more than 9 percent. In 1990, violent crimes increased by 14 percent. The State experienced 37 homicides, 311 rapes, 1,225 robberies, 3,018 assaults, 11,326 burglaries, 26,666 larcenies, and 7,990 motor vehicle thefts in 1990.
