Abstract
The student booklet on various forms of child abuse contains material for two 1-hour courses taught on two separate days. Topics covered in the first session include Canadian families and child protection laws, the difference between discipline and abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, physical neglect, how to get help, helplines for children, and how friends can help. The second session focuses on the kinds of sexual abuse, the characteristics of sexual offenders, how some children feel when they are abused sexually, how to prevent sexual abuse, and persons who can help. The student booklet on dating violence also consists of two 1-hour sessions presented on different days. The first session addresses the nature of dating, the choices that should be maintained in a dating relationship, the nature of emotional abuse and physical assault, the cycle of violence, and resource persons. The second session focuses on sexual assault, factors in dating violence, power and control in relationships, prevention, and how to find help from persons who can speak the child's language. The presenter's guide provides guidelines and resources for the instructors who conduct the two courses that use the two student booklets.
