It examines expenditures and personnel trends in the context of rising inmate populations and community corrections caseloads. The information reported is based on the Adult Corrections Revenue, Expenditure and Personnel survey, which is conducted annually by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics. In 1994- 95, Federal and Provincial/Territorial government operating expenditures for adult corrections totalled $1.9 billion. After adjusting for inflation, spending at the national level was 2 percent lower than 4 years ago. The Federal Government spent $913 million on adult corrections, and the Provinces and Territories spent $980 million. It cost approximately $44,000 per year to keep a person in a Federal penitentiary, compared with $39,000 in a Provincial facility. The per capita cost to operate the adult corrections system was $65 for each person in Canada. In the Federal sector, the number of inmates in Federal institutions increased 24 percent between 1990-91 and 1994-95, and operational costs increased by only 6 percent. 3 tables, 4 figures, and 3 references
