This book presents a therapy of social action, which is a proven model of therapeutic intervention developed for professionals who work with violent men.
Abstract
At the core of this treatment technique is the conviction that the offender is fully responsible for his actions. A therapy of social action requires the offender to acknowledge his violent actions, demonstrate authentic repentance, make amends to the victim, and find acceptable alternative behaviors. The book contains case studies that illustrate the step-by-step therapeutic process for working with clients who have committed incest, child abuse, juvenile sexual crimes, or marital violence. The author provides instruction for developing communication skills that will compel the offender to take full responsibility for his violent acts. Guidelines are also provided for how to confront the offender with the effects of his violent actions, so he can empathize with his victim. Suggestions are offered for allowing other family members who have been victims or offenders to reveal themselves during the therapeutic process. Recommendations are offered for discussing with the offender and adult family members the consequences of any further violence. Recommendations also pertain to identifying a special protector for the victim who can provide guidance and comfort and watch for signs of any further violence, to deciding on appropriate long- term reparation for the victim, and to helping offenders realize how they have been programmed for violence.
