This manual is designed to assist Boys' and Girls' Club professionals to understand and address child abuse, sexual exploitation, and missing children through the Clubs they serve.
Abstract
A section that contains facts about child abuse addresses definitions, the extent of the problem, indicators of child abuse, the discovery or disclosure of abuse, and procedures for reporting suspected abuse. Another section provides information on abusers, including those who perpetrate physical abuse and sexual abuse. A section on missing children discusses nonfamily abductions of children, family abductions, other missing children, and the characteristics of missing children. The concluding section profiles child protection strategies. The strategies are based on recognizing the nature of the problems, minimizing the risk factors, and taking action in the best interest of the child. A discussion of staffing focuses on the selection of Club staff who will not victimize the children they are selected to serve. The personnel selection process described consists of the application, the interview, and reference checks. Guidelines for staff training suggest that training cover the following topics: definitions of child abuse and neglect; the extent of the problem; indicators of abuse; discovery, disclosure, and reporting; youth protection policies and procedures; and safety strategies for children. Also discussed under child protection strategies are policies and procedures and safety information for children. A 19-item bibliography and appended sample child abuse form, sample employment application, sample Club policy, information for distribution, and a list of additional resources
