The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 reinforced existing NIJ activities; stimulated new research and evaluation initiatives; and sharpened NIJ's focus on innovation, especially through its emphasis on community policing, violence against women, alternative sanctions such as shock incarceration programs, and drug courts. NIJ awarded more than $55 million for projects involving research, evaluation, program development, technology development, and information dissemination. Research projects provided information on violence causes and prevention, juvenile delinquency, new strategies for responding to domestic assault, community policing, drug- related crime, new approaches to adjudication and corrections, and advances in science and technology.
