These 14 papers focus on child sexual abuse, with emphasis on knowledge and experience in selected areas and recommendations for improving public policies in the United States that have an impact on the problem of child sexual abuse.
Abstract
Individual papers focus on the nature and exent of child sexual abuse, its immediate and long-term impacts, reporting and investigating child sexual abuse, the adjudication of child sexual abuse, the role of physicians in reporting and assessing child sexual abuse cases, problems and concerns in the handling of child sexual abuse reports, psychotherapy treatment strategies and effectiveness for child victims, offender characteristics and treatment, and the prevention of child sexual abuse. Among recommendations are the use of specific definitions in laws and research, improved epidemiological information about the prevalence of chld abuse, more training for mandated reporters, and the use of a three-tiered classification for reports of child abuse. Additional actions recommended include efforts to reduce the stress to the child of the investigation and adjudication processes, improvement in the medical community's response to child sexual abuse, and better research about which child victims are at risk for serious problems and which treatments are most effective in dealing with these problems.
