Ten forensic case histories from Australia provide insight into some aspect of forensic science that proved useful for the courts.
Abstract
One case history involved the identification of a skeleton based upon the microscopic examination of a deteriorated piece of fabric found on the skeleton, compared with the reports of the clothing worn by a man reported missing 3 1/2 years earlier. The second case involved the reconstruction of an attempted murder that used a firearm and an automobile as weapons. Three other cases that involved the use of acid to attempt to harm another person focus on investigative techniques that linked suspects to the type of acid used in the attack. An investigation of the death of a scuba diver focused on faulty equipment and the fit of the diving mask. Another case consisted of a suspect's exculpatory explanation of why he was found in the driver's seat of a stolen semi-trailer, an explanation accepted by a jury. Remaining cases address the identification of an intruder who attempted the sexual assault of a woman in her home, the linking of items of evidence to a suspect in a kidnapping and murder case, and the use of a ballistics analysis to link suspects to the shooting of a constable.
