Training materials designed to bridge the gap between correctional research and practice are provided that were used at the American Probation and Parole Association's 20th Annual Training Institute.
Abstract
The materials include an overview of the National Institute of Corrections and information on technical assistance available from the National Institute of Corrections Academy. Other materials focus on treatment effectiveness (research and clinical principles), the delivery of appropriate correctional services, the psychology of criminal conduct, the effectiveness of treatment versus criminal sanctions, risk factors in crime, criminality prediction, recidivism, rehabilitative programming, and principles of effective correctional treatment. Finally, materials cover programmatic and nonprogrammatic aspects of successful interventions with offenders and and offer guidelines for evaluating interventions with violent offenders.
