Expenditures on policing in Canada during 1994/1995 remained virtually unchanged for the second consecutive year, after having increased an average of 7 percent annually between 1985/1986 and 1992/1993; the total of $5.78 billion in 1994/1995 cost Canadians about $200 per capita on an annual basis.
Abstract
The largest annual decline in police strength (2 percent) was recorded in 1994, resulting in the fewest number of police officers per capita in Canada since 1972. Despite the overall decline in police strength, the number of female police officers continued to increase, accounting for 9 percent of all police officers. Detailed data are provided on police officers by gender and rank, the geographic distribution of police officers, the number of police officers by policing level, criminal code incidents per police officer, civilian personnel in police departments, policing costs and expenditures, and police responsibilities. 10 tables and 9 figures
