Eleven participants were in treatment at a clinic that specialized in working with sexual abuse survivors; the nine others were in treatment at a clinic that specialized in working with sexual offenders. Four other groups were used for comparison purposes. These included 11 adult males who were in abuse survivor treatment and who had been sexually molested by other males, nine adult males who were in sex offender treatment and had been sexually abused by other males, 11 adult males with no known history of sexual abuse who were in psychotherapy for other issues, and nine adult males in sex offender treatment with no known history of having been sexually abused. All participants were administered the MMPI as part of their total clinical evaluation when entering treatment. Results suggested that the MMPI profiles of the two groups of adult males abused by their maternal caregivers displayed greater psychological disruption than did the MMPI profiles of adult males who has children had not been victimized or had been victimized by older males. Thus, treatment strategies may need to be formulated on the basis of the gender of the victimizer as well as on the gender of the victim. Figures and 22 references (Author abstract modified)
