Reported crime incidents in Australia have been increasing over the past several years, and crime rates for homicide, robbery, and motor vehicle theft in four Australian cities are compared to those in cities in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
Abstract
Compared to cities in Germany and the United States, cities in Australia and the United Kingdom show a low homicide rate. Robbery rates in the four Australian cities are among eight cities with the lowest robbery rates. All six U.S. cities have higher robbery rates than cities in the other three countries. Australian and German cities have lower motor vehicle theft rates than cities in the United States and the United Kingdom. Other data indicate that the number of juveniles sent to Australian correctional facilities has been declining since 1981, that the imprisonment rate in Australia has been gradually increasing since 1985, that the number of deaths in police custody has decreased since 1987, and that offense rates for drug possession and use vary according to state and territory in Australia. 7 figures
