This report presents statistics on inmate populations across New York State, New York City, and county correctional facilities in New York from 1982 through 1993.
Abstract
State correctional facilities had a total of 64,294 inmates in November 1993, an increase of 5 percent over the previous year. New York City Department of Correction Facilities housed 18,525 individuals on the same date, a decrease of 8 percent from the previous year, while local county jails and penitentiaries had 12,644 inmates, an increase of 3 percent. The total county inmate capacity was 20,627 for New York City and 15,004 for upstate New York in December 1993, while occupancy was 89 percent for the city and 84 percent for upstate New York. Additional data present sentenced and unsentenced admissions to jails, penitentiaries, prisons, and lockups; inmate deaths from suicide, AIDS, natural causes, and homicide in State and local correctional facilities. Tables and figures
