This is a record of topics discussed at the technical workshop on innovative treatment approaches to drug addiction.
Abstract
The workshop included presentations on: (1) Innovative Treatment Approaches; (2) Cocaine Intervention Program; (3) Anti-Cocaine Catalytic Antibodies; (4) Effect of Treatment on Drug-Related Behavioral Problems; (5) Clinical Approach to Medications Development for Addiction; and (6) The Development of Medications for the Treatment of Drug Addiction. A section on a national evaluation of substance abuse treatment contains statistics on the size of the problem, requirements for such an evaluation, and what it will provide. A representative of Guilford Pharmaceuticals, Inc. described the cocaine intervention program. The final presentation is a discussion of the primary reasons for the current reluctance of pharmaceutical companies to invest in the research, development, and marketing of medications for the treatment of opiate and cocaine addiction.
