Abstract
The President of The College on Problems of Drug Dependence opened the meeting with an address on Evidence-Based Treatment and Prevention: Research for the Health of the Public. Subjects addressed in 15 symposiums included: (1) workings of the brain reward system; (2) drug testing in the workplace; (3) functional evidence for effects of drugs of abuse on infection and immune responses; (4) endocrine function and the relationship to addictions; (5) basic neurobiology of abused drugs; (6) inhalant abuse; (7) the role of pharmacogenetics in the identification and administration of new medications for treating drug abuse; (8) the conflicts for parenting drug dependent women; (9) neurotoxicity and neuropathology associated with chronic cocaine abuse; (10) caffeine as a model drug of abuse; and (11) cross-cultural comparisons of substance abuse.
