Conference Highlights from the Second National Conference on Drug Abuse Research and Practice focus on research updates, treatment, prevention and epidemiology, and HIV/AIDS among drug users.
Abstract
Summaries of plenary sessions include an overview of the National Institute on Drug Abuse's (NIDA's) new role at the National Institutes of Health, a review of 20 years of drug abuse research, and the application of drug abuse research in practice. Other summaries of plenary sessions address drug abuse and the public health, the building of an infrastructure for drug abuse prevention and treatment, people in recovery, and plans for the 21st century. Summaries of research awareness seminars are grouped under the general topics of research updates, treatment, prevention and epidemiology, and HIV/AIDS. The research updates encompass such topics as drug addiction and the brain, research on specific drugs and their effects, genetics and drug abuse, and outcomes for children of drug abusers. Seminars on treatment encompass such topics as treatment methods, medications, drug- testing techniques, and treatment alternatives for criminal justice clients. Seminars that pertain to prevention and epidemiology consider such issues as family and school prevention programs, communitywide drug abuse prevention approaches, the link between drugs and violence, and risk and protective factors in adolescent drug use and abuse. Seminars on HIV/AIDS include discussions of HIV/AIDS outreach intervention research and the effectiveness of teaching safe sex practices with drug abusers. Summaries of issues forums are under the general topics of special populations, treatment, research, policy/administration, substance abuse and HIV/AIDS, and prevention. Also included in this report are summaries of workshops, film festival summaries, posters, luncheon table topics, exhibitors and computer demonstrations, and a directory of speakers.
