Abstract
Seven authors contributed seven chapters: (1) The Construction and Deconstruction of Crime; (2) Crime and Social Order: Interrogating the Detective Story; (3) Crime, Order and Historical Change; (4) Dangerous Places: Crime and the City; (5) Dangerous Places: The Family as a Site of Crime; (6) Hidden and Respectable: Crime and the Market; and (7) Political Violence, Terrorism and Crimes of the State. The volume includes exercises to test understanding and develop critical thinking; comments that provide feedback and an opportunity for students to check their own responses; shorter questions to encourage reflection; and key concepts that are central to the study of criminology. In addition, most chapters contain short readings to aid in the application of central ideas and concepts to contemporary social developments and political ideologies.
