Abstract
Four papers providing an overview of child abuse and neglect focus on the extent of the problem; a typology of physical abusers, the assessment and diagnosis of neglect and physical and sexual abuse, and the mobilization of resources for case management in the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Five papers focus on interdisciplinary and community-based approaches to treatment; topics include the physician's response to the abused child, the role of the social worker, legal issues related to case building in child abuse, the school's role in intervention and prevention, and the role of the mental health professional in the family systems approach. Six papers examine practice issues related to child pornography, child sexual abuse, the treatment of adults molested as children, the treatment of an incest survivor, the training of educators to work with victims of child abuse and neglect, and issues that arise when therapist who have been victimized provide services for victims and perpetrators. The final two chapters examine policy and professional issues related to advocacy for the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Table, photographs, checklist, and chapter reference lists
