This seventh annual report on the health status and service needs of children in the United States compiles health status indicator data.
Abstract
Data are presented for infants, children, adolescents, and women of childbearing age. The information gives the reader a multidimensional perspective on the health of children in the United States, based on the World Health Organization's definition of health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease. While statistical trends presented in the report reveal areas of progress, they also illustrate the extent to which some health risks continue to plague the lives of children and families. General health status data are presented on infant, child, and adolescent mortality. Specific data are presented on neonatal and postneonatal mortality, maternal mortality, low birth weight, infant feeding, childhood deaths due to injury, hospitalization, lead exposure, pediatric AIDS, child abuse and neglect, adolescent deaths due to injury, teenage pregnancy, teenage abortion, teenage sexual activity, adolescent AIDS, substance abuse, and cigarette smoking. In addition to health status, health services utilization and population characteristics are addressed. References, tables, figures, and photographs
