This monograph is based on papers prepared by principal investigators and other staff members from 20 projects of the Perinatal-20 Treatment Research Demonstration Program funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse in 1989 and 1990.
Abstract
The monograph describes project experiences, products, procedures, and implementation strategies to help established investigators and clinicians involved in developing innovative services at sites not yet experienced in research. Each of the 20 projects scientifically evaluated either a comprehensive treatment program composed of an integrated service system or a specific therapeutic intervention embedded in a comprehensive continuum of care. In addition, each project targeted either the drug-abusing woman of childbearing age in treatment with her children (predominantly pregnant or postpartum) or the woman in treatment without her children. Projects explored the differential effectiveness of the two treatment types and measured the success of the two treatment types using standard intake and outcome measures. Projects specifically focused on such areas as treatment research partnerships in the community, therapeutic communities for drug-abusing women and their children, case management, retention of women in drug treatment research, psychosocial aspects and social networks of drug- abusing women, perinatal drug abuse, early childrearing environment, and cocaine-dependent pregnant women and their families.
