Abstract
To assess drug abuse patterns and trends, city- and State-specific data were gathered from a variety of sources, including: (1) public health agencies; (2) medical and treatment facilities; (3) criminal justice and correctional offices; (4) law enforcement agencies; (5) surveys; and other sources unique to local areas, such as (6) drug-related deaths reported by medical examiners, coroners or State public health agencies; (7) drug-related emergency department mentions; (8) primary substance of abuse reported by clients at admission to treatment programs; (9) arrestee urinalysis results; and (10) seizure, price, purity, prescription/distribution, and arrest data. The executive summary is organized by specific drug of abuse: cocaine and crack, heroin, opiates other than heroin, marijuana, stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, and other drugs. The Executive Summary also includes a discussion of AIDS among injecting drug users. Exhibits
