This summary of conference major addresses, special sessions, workshops, and panels and roundtables addresses the reinforcement of government and community partnerships in reducing violent crime and drug abuse.
Abstract
The keynote address provides guidelines for success in community coalition building, and the luncheon address emphasizes that the whole community must become involved if the community is to be a place of safety and peace. Special sessions consisted of two plenary sessions on the implementation of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 and the Federal, State, and local success in building collaborative programs. Presentations and tours of Jacksonville-based programs (Florida conference site) constituted another special session. The content of seven workshops is also summarized. Topics included successful State and local programs, technical assistance and training for State and local agencies, State evaluation capacity building, strategies for serious violent juvenile offenders, finding funding alternatives, technical assistance and training for State and local program implementation, and assessment and evaluation techniques and practices. Nineteen panels and roundtables are summarized. They discussed such topics as business alliances, multijurisdictional task forces, emerging ideas, assessing and managing drug and violent offenders in the community, violence in the workplace, violence against women, and collaborative efforts between U.S. attorneys and State and local programs.
