NCIS gathers information on offenders ranging from drug traffickers, money launderers, and organized criminal groups to pedophiles and people involved in disturbances at sports events. NCIS was established in April 1992. Its 500 personnel come from the police, Customs and Excise, and the Home Office. Its organized crime unit is responsible for gathering, analyzing, and issuing intelligence on organized criminal activity. The drugs unit provides strategic intelligence to law enforcement agencies and government departments and focuses specifically on trends in the use of certain drugs, importation routes, and the emergence of new drugs of abuse. The unit also detects illicit drug laboratories in Great Britain and prevents the diversion of chemicals for the clandestine production of drugs in Great Britain and elsewhere. Efforts also focus on child sexual abuse, vehicle theft, and violence at soccer games.
