Data for this report were obtained from CARS (Comprehensive Auto-Theft Research System). One chapter of the report reviews general vehicle theft and recovery trends in South Australia during the last 25 years and compares recent statistics with those from across the country. Three chapters analyze various factors related to thefts and recoveries. One chapter addresses the temporal characteristics associated with theft and recoveries (month, day of week, time of day, and time interval between theft and recovery). Another chapter analyzes spatial characteristics of auto theft (location). Vehicle characteristics such as body type, make, year of manufacture, engine size, etc., are addressed in a chapter, along with factors such as means of entry, type of damage sustained, and estimated value of the vehicle. Chapter 6 focuses on the insurance data, with estimates of insurer's costs cross-tabulated by type of coverage, condition of the vehicle at recovery, type of salvage, make, year of manufacture, and an analysis of claims suspected of being fraudulent. Apprehended offenders are profiled in chapter 7, and chapter 8 analyzes the responses by the criminal justice system to alleged offenders.
