Annotation: This report presents statistics on the numbers, capacities, types, security levels, inmate populations, correctional employees, and other characteristics of State and Federal adult correctional institutions and community-based facilities on June 30, 1995.
Abstract: The census revealed that the number of facilities in operation increased from 1,287 at midyear 1990, when the last census was conducted, to 1,500 at midyear 1995. The States operated 1,375 facilities, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons operated 125 facilities. Each year the rated capacity of State facilities expanded an average of 6.9 percent. Community-based facilities accounted for about 20 percent of all facilities in both 1990 and 1995. The number of inmates in State and Federal correctional facilities increased an average of 7.4 percent a year, from 715,649 in 1990 to 1,023,572 in 1995. Inmates committed more assaults against staff and other inmates in 1995 than in 1990, but the rate of assault declined slightly. The number of employees in correctional facilities totaled 264,201 in 1990 and 347,320 at midyear 1995. Nearly two-thirds of all correctional personnel were in custody or security positions. Additional statistics cover inmate characteristics, facility security levels, court orders, female staff, and the race of staff.
