The Will County Sheriff's Department recently reviewed and updated its use-of-force policy and redesigned the training program that supports that policy. It was deemed important that deputies be given periodic hands-on training in defensive tactics as well as use-of-force policy review training. The integrated program consists of five elements: the mission statement; the focusing mechanism of the Use of Force Model; the placement of approved specific tools, tactics, and timing; an articulation of a written philosophy of force; and the comprehensive presentation of the procedures that support the system. One of the critical components of the program is the use-of-force model. The model provides five levels of enforcement electives. It graphically illustrates what action a deputy can take based upon what action the offender takes. The department implemented an inservice training program to acquaint the staff with the new policy and the proper use of the available options for responding to an offender's actions.
