Abstract
Normally a plain clothes officer, whether on or off duty, does not carry all of the equipment borne by a uniform belt. It is important to remember that if an officer becomes involved in a confrontation, that officer must know where his/her equipment is located, how to get to it quickly, and how to use it appropriately and effectively. An officer's survival mind set is also important. The survival mind set should be the same whether in uniform or plain clothes, on duty or off duty. A survival mindset, choice of tactics, and the appropriate use of equipment are the necessary components of surviving a confrontation. In the case of plain clothes attire, an officer's equipment should be concealed to public view regardless of whether on or off duty. Also, other officers may appear on the scene in the course of a confrontation. The plain clothes officer should show his/her shield. Upon entering an encounter the plain clothes officer should repeatedly announce his/her identity as a police officer. Suggestions for plain clothes officers to respond appropriately in a confrontation are: be more aware of surroundings; be vigilant at all times; trust their feelings as well as what they hear and see; have a simple plan based on when something happens rather than if something happens; and use crisis rehearsal, visualization, positive self-talk, and remember to breathe properly.
