The CHOICES Treatment Program is a behavioral health program of Woodward Academy in Iowa; it provides long-term, comprehensive residential treatment for adjudicated delinquents and other males between ages 12 and 18.
Abstract
CHOICES is 1 of 19 sites operated by Youth Services International. CHOICES combines principles of reality therapy with behavioral technologies. CHOICES serves male youths who have a demonstrated need for enhanced social skills development and who display a range of both cognitive and behavioral deficits. CHOICES has six components: (1) respect, self-awareness, and responsibility; (2) intensely scheduled activities; (3) modified positive peer culture; (4) total behavior change; (5) emphasis on spiritual, mental, and physical education; and (6) work experience. Intensity, integrity, and intimacy are considered integral to the success of students. The treatment program mixes social skills training with physical and confidence training, academic education, and vocational preparation within a modified positive peer environment. Treatment objectives are aligned with established cultural and group norms and learned self-control. Daily and weekend schedules and descriptions of program components
