Abstract
Lessons learned in drug prevention and demand reduction pertain to the inclusion of alcohol and tobacco abuse prevention with illicit drug use prevention; the value of strategy conferences and workshops; the value of drug education for grade school children; the importance of a uniform in National Guard member presentations to youth; management issues; and the use of formal orders for National Guard personnel doing volunteer work. Lessons learned in the area of reconnaissance/observation address the use of remote sensors; the value of military support teams in extreme environments; and training for National Guard personnel on how to react in unexpected situations. In the area of cannabis eradication support, lessons relate to the confidentiality of eradication schedules; recognition and response to booby traps; the vulnerability of unattended vehicles during operations; the handling of direct contact with suspects; and the synchronization of reconnaissance and eradication requirements. Remaining lessons are in the areas of coordination and planning, aviation support in counter-drug operations, and language translations of transcripts of conversations related to drug investigations.
