This report presents preliminary national estimates of drug-related emergency episodes during the first, second, and third quarters of 1992, along with final estimates for 1988-91, based on information from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), an ongoing national survey of hospital emergency rooms.
Abstract
The data reveal that an estimated 109,200 drug-related hospital emergency room episodes occurred in the third quarter of 1992. This total was almost unchanged from the third quarter of 1991 or the second quarter of 1992. The total included 30,900 episodes, 4,000 more than reported in the second quarter of 1992 but little changed from the third quarter of 1991. The total also included 13,400 heroin episodes. Heroin-related emergencies increased during the third quarter of 1992 to their highest level since nationally representative quarterly estimates were presented by DAWN in the first quarter of 1988. Cocaine episodes increased 30 percent and heroin episodes increased 42 percent among those ages 35 and older, compared to the third quarter of 1991. A total of 400,100 drug related episodes were estimated to have occurred in 1991. Tables and figures
