This report presents preliminary data for the first 6 months of 1993 and final annual national estimates of drug-related emergency episodes for 1988-92, based on information from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), an ongoing national survey of hospital emergency rooms.
Abstract
The data reveal that since the second half of 1990, the estimated number of drug-related estimates has been increasing. More than half of the increase involved heroin. Increases also occurred for marijuana, methamphetamines, PCP, and the medication trazodone used in treating aggressive behaviors and cocaine withdrawal. Between the first half of 1993 and the first half of 1993, the number of drug-related emergency room episodes increased from 24,900 to 27,700 for those ages 12-17, from 64,700 to 69,400 for those ages 26-34, and from 74,600 to 83,300 for those ages 35 and over. Increases in total episodes occurred for men, women, whites, and Hispanics. Figures and appended methodological information and tables
