This directory provides statistical and contact information on the jails and detention centers in each of the 50 States and the District of Columbia, as well as those under the Federal Bureau of Prisons as of April 1996.
Abstract
Several national summary tables are included at the front of the directory. They contain only information from survey respondents (37.9 percent response rate). The summaries pertain to the number of U.S. jails and detention centers, jail and detention facility budgets, jail and detention facility population, and jail and detention facility staff. Statewide summaries precede each State's listings and provide an overview of the State's local jails and detention facilities; they are presented in total and further broken down by the size of the jail. Information for each facility encompasses the number of facilities; adult and juvenile population, admissions, and releases; total payroll staff and total correctional officers; staff-to-inmate ratio; and operating expenses. Each directory listing contains the facility name, address, and phone number, as well as the listing of the current or most recent sheriff and jail administrator. Facilities are identified by size. For respondents, more detailed information is provided, including the date of the last major renovation; whether the facility plans any capital improvements in the next 2 years and how these changes will affect bed capacity; population, admissions, and releases, both adult and juvenile, by gender; total staff and correctional officers by gender; and average daily population of alternative programming.
