Because computer technology has become a significant tool for both legitimate businesses and criminals, local law enforcement agencies deal with a wide assortment of computer- related crimes.
Abstract
Law enforcement agencies have historically encountered significant difficulties in finding individuals with technical expertise and investigative training. Further, computer companies introduce thousands of new products each year and it is virtually impossible to stay knowledgeable about all computer systems. Another problem is that obtaining adequate funding to deal with computer-related crimes is difficult, particularly since the general public often does not view white collar crimes as serious. Despite these problems, local law enforcement agencies can take several steps to prevent computer-related crimes. They must integrate computers into basic training for all police officers, become more computer-active across the board, carefully articulate the need for funds, provide computer technological knowledge and training on a continuous basis, and collaborate in computer crime prevention. 9 endnotes
