Inmates serve their sentences in one of four correctional programs: prisons, drug addiction treatment centers, training centers, or detention centers. Of 17,631 admissions in 1995, 14,322 were sentenced to prisons, 2,533 to drug addiction treatment centers, 443 to training centers, and 333 to detention centers. The statistical report is divided into four sections. The first section provides an overview of socioeconomic and criminal characteristics of sentenced persons. The second section summarizes key statistics on sentenced persons by correctional program type. The third section contains detailed statistics on drug-dependent persons, while the fourth section presents comparative statistics for 1994 and 1995 on selected characteristics.
