Information on the characteristics of victims of abusers came from the Child Protection Registry in March 1995 and from a community report on child abuse in Hong Kong from September 1978 to February 1979. Results revealed that the computerized Child Protection Registry contained 457 active cases of child abuse or suspected child abuse. Forty-four percent of the cases involved males and 56 percent involved females. Fifty percent of the victims were children ages 7-12, and 62.4 percent experienced physical abuse. The abusers or suspected abusers were 52 percent male and 48 percent female. Forty-nine percent were in their 30's. Seventy-five percent of the abusers were married or cohabiting and 60 percent had only an elementary school education. Findings indicated increases in child sexual abuse cases, female victims of child abuse, and male abusers or sexual abusers since 1979. Tables and 12 references (Author abstract modified)
