This report details the activities planned by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for fiscal year 1980 and the funding requested to support these activities.
Abstract
DEA expects that the drug abuse dilemma of fiscal year 1980 will be similar to that of preceding years. Although DEA has had successes in combating illicit drugs, the constant issue of Mexican brown heroin, the potential increased influx of Southeast Asian white heroin, and the increased popularity and availability of South American cocaine will challenge current DEA resources and personnel. Recent trends include an increase in major drug trafficking organizations, shifting sources and patterns of supply, and the increasingly sophisticated technical resources of traffickers. The major focus of the Domestic Enforcement Program will be the disruption of high-level drug traffickers and financiers. Other DEA efforts will focus on foreign cooperative investigations, intelligence collection and analysis, compliance activities, assistance to State and local government, and research and development. The funding request for fiscal year 1980 amounts to $193,836,000 and 4,049 positions. Tables
