This report presents the proposed budget for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for fiscal year 1980, together with transcripts of the 1979 congressional hearings on the budget.
Abstract
The appropriation request of $193,836,000 and 4,074 positions is almost the same from the anticipated 1979 appropriation of $194,225,000 and 4,213 positions. DEA plans to maintain efforts to encourage Mexico to eradicate drug sources. It also plans to monitor the Southeast Asian and Mid-East heroin situation and the possible resurgence of heroin trafficking through Europe, disrupt the flow of bulk marijuana and cocaine shipments from Colombia and the Caribbean, stem the rapidly increasing clandestine manufacture and trafficking of PCP, and continue domestic drug law enforcement efforts against major drug trafficking violators. The proposed budget reductions will occur mainly in domestic enforcement and intelligence and largely represent unfilled positions or positions that will become vacant through attrition. Tables
