This report presents the proposed budget for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for fiscal year 1977, together with transcripts of the 1976 congressional hearing on the budget.
Abstract
The House Appropriations Committee recommended expenditures of $161,175,000, an increase of $8,174,000 over the appropriation for the current fiscal year. This recommendation amounts to an increase of $1,888,000 above the DEA budget request to restore the proposed reduction in administratively uncontrollable overtime. The testimony noted that the estimated direct and indirect costs of drug abuse is as high as $17 billion per year. These costs largely represent crime-related property losses, health care costs, and lost productivity. DEA's efforts will focus on apprehending major drug traffickers, compliance investigations, continued cooperation with foreign governments, improved intelligence, and information sharing with other Federal agencies, and support of local and State initiatives.
