This article describes the facilities and programs of the Woodland Hills Youth Development Center in Nashville, Tenn.
Abstract
Woodland Hills is a regional development center that serves male youths committed by Middle Tennessee courts. The center also serves female youths committed by courts statewide. A juvenile must have committed three felonies or a crime such as murder, rape, or aggravated assault to qualify for this ACA-accredited facility. Classification and assessment enable staff to evaluate treatment and security needs. Ongoing assessment includes monthly evaluations to determine progress, identify new treatment needs, and ensure the continuum of care. The center also offers individual and group counseling in substance abuse, aggression replacement, anger management, sexual victimization/offender treatment, independent living skills, and parenting skills. Also available are speech/language therapy, intensive psychiatric therapy, and suicide prevention treatment. The school program requires residents to attend classes seven periods a day, 5 days a week all year.
