This report describes the Montana court system and presents statistical data on the numbers of cases filed and decided in each type of court during 1995.
Abstract
The State Supreme Court received 580 new filings and disposed of 694 cases, including 521 by remittur, 92 by dismissal, 73 by writ denied, and 8 by writ granted. The court issued 392 formal opinions and has 343 cases pending. The district courts received 32,871 new filings, an increase of more than 10 percent over the previous year. New filings consisted of 41.2 percent civil actions, 23.4 percent domestic relations cases, 15.35 criminal filings, and 20.1 percent miscellaneous filings. The justice of the peace, city courts, and municipal courts received more than 339,379 new cases. More than 68.5 percent were criminal cases; more than half of the criminal cases were traffic cases.
