The author first categorizes various dysfunctional adolescent behavioral patterns. This is followed by a discussion of the major causes and contributing factors in the development of adolescents who are at risk for problem behaviors. These include violence in the home, negative peer group influences, inadequate role models, substance abuse, exposure to media violence, child abuse, unrealistic dreams of having material wealth, nutrition, low self-esteem, and anger. Some of the causal theories considered are strain theory, differential-association theory, and labeling theory. Remaining chapters consider intervention strategies. One chapter focuses on the resistance dilemma, since often resistance must be overcome before any effective intervention can be achieved. Suggestions for overcoming resistance pertain to confidentiality, humor, using silence, distraction, and identification with the juvenile's problem. Other chapters discuss how to manage juvenile manipulators, the use of discipline and control, conflict resolution, and parent education designed to help parents prevent and manage adolescent problem behaviors. 43 references and a subject index
