This report describes the caseloads and operations of the Alaska court system for fiscal year 1996.
Abstract
A total of 21,040 cases were filed in superior courts, and 121,080 cases were filed in district courts. Felony filings increased 16 percent over the previous year; seven courts reported more than 20-percent increases in felony filings. The largest felony grouping statewide consisted of violent crimes. Anchorage differed from the statewide profile in that drug offenses formed the largest grouping and represented approximately one-third of all felony cases filed. The court system had an annual budget of more than $45 million and operated 15 combined superior and district court locations and 44 locations with district courts only. The State courts experienced significant change during the year. The Anchorage court moved into a newly constructed courthouse, a State superior court seat was transferred from Valdez to Palmer to address changing needs, and a superior court judge became the first woman appointed to the Alaska Supreme Court.
