This volume describes the seven characteristics of schools with successful drug prevention programs and presents ideas from the 107 schools honored in the United States Department of Education's Drug-Free School recognition in 1989-90 and 1990-91.
Abstract
The successful schools share the following characteristics: they (1) recognize, assess, and monitor the problem; (2) interact and build a network with community groups and agencies; (3) set, implement, and enforce policy; (4) determine curriculum, select materials, and teach the prevention curriculum; (5) provide extensive staff training; (6) involve students in drug-free activities; and (7) promote parent involvement and provide parent education. The manual profiles schools in Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska, and New Mexico. It also provides suggestions for overcoming problems such as community denial, difficult home situations that place children at risk, pervasive alcohol use in the community, and smoking among staff members. Lists of suggestions, photographs, chart profiling each school, and lists of resource organizations and toll-free hotlines
