Abstract
Each chapter addresses broad issues associated with the criminal justice system as it pertains to prison-based treatment. The first chapter provides a general overview of therapeutic communities and prison drug treatment, followed by a chapter that describes the challenges faced by correctional workers: rising costs, institutional overcrowding, and intervention. The third chapter focuses on substance abuse assessment, treatment matching, and the management of the drug-abusing offender. Three chapters discuss drug treatment programs in correctional settings, and another chapter provides an assessment of drug abuse treatment programs in the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Two chapters provide up-to-date assessments of outcome evaluations of prison therapeutic communities, and one chapter explores the root causes and potential solutions to increasing violence in American society. Finally, the book presents the scope, purpose, applicability, and methods of evaluating correctional treatment strategies currently being used in correctional settings. 224 references and a subject index
