The book charts the development of intermediate treatment and juvenile justice services in Cambridgeshire, England, locating these within major organizational structures and management contexts that developed over a 20-year period from the early 1970's to the early 1990's. Particular attention is paid to the period around the end of the 1980's and early 1990's and to the nature and implications of modern managerialism for the delivery of juvenile justice services. The understanding of these developments is enhanced by locating modern organizational structures and processes in the context of a sociological account of conditions and characteristics of modernity. Contemporary social service departments are discussed in terms of their organizational parts: management chains, policy development committees, policy implementation committees, and documentary structures. A juvenile justice initiative in Cambridgeshire, referred to as the Joint Service Strategy, is described. 157 references, 224 footnotes, 1 table, and 26 figures
