Recommendations from an International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) summit are summarized that focus on preventing youth violence.
Abstract
The IACP summit, convened in response to the increasing number of violent crimes committed by young offenders, was held in April 1996. Participants included leaders in the fields of law enforcement, juvenile justice, criminal justice, community programs, and health and social services. Summit operations were highly interactive; participants worked in small groups to examine youth violence from various perspectives (law enforcement, juvenile justice, community, family, school, and health). Each group identified or developed strategies to reduce youth violence. Specific summit recommendations are organized according to 10 categories: (1) strengthen the family; (2) mobilize the community; (3) reposition law enforcement; (4) recapture schools; (5) treat youth violence as an epidemic; (6) strengthen the delivery of justice; (7) strengthen interagency partnerships; (8) intensify public education; (9) replicate programs that work; and (10) improve information sharing. 12 tables and 1 figure
